Purpose: The purpose of this lab is to demonstrate gel electrophoresis and to demonstrate how DNA restriction fragments travel through the agarose gel with an electric current based on molecular weight.

Results: For the first part of the lab both the LB+ and LB- both showed lawn colonies, the LB/Amp+ (experimental) 25 colonies, and the LB/Amp- showed no colonies. The amp+ still grew while the ones with amp- didn't grow colonies. For the second part of the lab the shorter the bp of the restriction fragments the farther they traveled in the gel electrophoresis.

Conclusion: The smaller DNA fragments went further toward the electric current than the larger fragments. This is because the smaller fragments were less dense allowing them to travel further in the gel and separate more from larger fragments

Validity: Yes these results are valid because the smaller restriction fragments traveled farther and had a smaller molecular weight and based on the results of this experiment, this was proved.
